golf is the greatest game on earth and fishing is the greatest sport! period!!!

well in my mind, life began at 5.  that is when my daddy (pronounced deaddy where i come from) introduced me to the game of golf and the sport of fishing.  i like golf.  i like fishing.  i like golf and fishing.  “like” is probably an understatement however…i love them!  one could say…they are my passion!  that’s right, i said passion!  by definition, i have suffered at times b/c  i should have been doing something more important and have gotten in trouble, been emotional at times like the time i made a whole in one or stuck a hook in my finger, and i love doing both of them.  i have been playing golf and fising since i was knee high to a grasshopper and thanks to my daddy’s influence… i want to do the same for my child.

golf…i remember my first set of golf clubs were bought for me at woolworth’s in columbus, ga.  the woods were “real” wood too!  the bag was a brown vinyl complete with a pouch of tees and plastic golf balls.  when the plastic balls got crushed, i found a couple of real ones that i could really knock the fire out of!  that was all good until the “real” wood clubs cracked and the irons got bent (a testament to the amazing force of my swing!!!).  my daddy taught me everything he knew about the game and it wasn’t long before i was beating him like a drum.  we played almost every afternoon after i got home from school.    i would pretend i was playing in the masters (which starts this week btw) and had to sink the last put to win!  every summer my daddy would take me all over to play in georgia state golf assoc., atlanta junior golf assoc., and american junior golf assoc. events.  i played in front of phil mickelson in the meridian classic tournament out in denver, co.  my dad and i played then and still play just about every time we get together today.  golf is the best game on earth!  period!  end of story!  don’t argue with me on this, you will loose.  want to play?  i will prove it to you!

fishing…my first fishing reel and rod was a zebco 202 number with the flimsiest rod you could ever imagine!  a birch switch is stiffer than that thing was but it would catch fish though.  i had a light blue tackle box with a white handle full of plastic worms for bass fishing.  daddy taught me to tie my own knots and everything!  my daddy would say, “now you have to be quite, or you’ll scare the fish away”.  we would spend hours in a boat and never say one word to each other.  strange as it sounds, i was with my daddy, that was what counted.  i remember one time when i was 5 or 6 we had launched out in the boat to fish a pond and after about 10 minutes i looked back at the truck and noticed someone breaking in it.  i said “daddy, someone is”  “shhhhhh!!!” he said.  i said “but daddy there is” “shhhhh now!  i mean it!” he said.  i didn’t say another word for three hours and when he saw that the truck had been broken into i said, “that is what i was trying to tell ya daddy”.  he never shhhhshed me again!  my daddy and i would fish in the spring and summer so much that it became a question of not if we were going but when we were going.  yessir, we fished i tell ya.  fishing is the best sport on earth!  period!  end of story!  don’t argue with me on this, you will loose.  want to go?  i will prove it to you!

have you figured out by now that my daddy influenced me by sharing with me his greatest passions?  how you ask?  i’m glad you asked!  the influence was not the golf and fishing you see, it was the influence of how to be a father.  he influenced me by sharing a game and sport yes! but, during the sharing, somewhere along the way we became friends, buddies, pals, father and son.  this is his legacy and why i want to carry it on with my child.  i cannot even imagine life without the influence of  my daddy.

be encouraged…
